"Warning: Birdwings from the Solomons"

   Hello everyone

I have notied recently that some people have been advertising birdwings from the Solomons with CITES.

Please be aware that at this time all trading of birdwing butterflies from the Solomons has been suspended by the CITES committee. Even though material may be sent from the Solomons with CITES papers (often faked), you risk getting into trouble with customs because of the suspension of trade.

The CITES committee will look at lifting the ban when it meets again in June.

You can find information regarding the suspension of trade on the CITES web site.

Ronald

   Thank you Ronald.

You are quite correct to point out these facts.
The only thing I might add is that it would
most likely be USFW and not Customs that would
be the problem.

Beware...all!

It is true that the Solomons has become a signatory to the convention however there is a ban on the issuance of permits for the Ornithoptera. I will be contacting Jeffery Kaura in Honiara and ask him for the current status for CITES as far as its administration and some idea of when legitimate CITES documentation is going to be issued. I shall do the email and will get back to the group immediatly upon his response. Cheers - Greg
