"Southern Utah Mountains"

Just got back from a trip to the Dixie National Forest near St. George, Utah. It was really more of a diurnal insect trip in the end, as the nights were still in the high forties at 6800 ft.! Tried black lighting regardless, and some things did come: a Polyphemus Moth and another huge silk moth which came and went fast (but I don't collect moths...), lots of other moths (of course), but those shiny black and brown scarabs came, too -- still not sure of their identity yet.

Ended up collecting grasshoppers, bees, a stonefly, etc. as seen in the rough field pinned specimens (a bit of a sign of slim beetle pickens), but in the daytime there were lots of Acmaeodera, a couple Rhagium and what was likely Chalcophora on the wing, but too fast for me to net (and they were only seen on the last day -- of course). Also found some blue-green cicendelids by a pond.

Sure seemed like a lot of leps, between butterflies, moths and skippers (I saw an interesting skipper with blue markings). But I don't collect leps... SIGH

Good trip overall, though. In a month, this location, with it's great diversity of tree species and so forth should be really nice for collecting.

Robyn

   Hi Robyn,
Hey if you think you would be up for collecting some of those butterflies, I'd trade you for some Florida grasshoppers, bees, and beetles. Let me know.
Thanks,
Jay
