Planting peppermint, eucalyptus, thyme and lavender will repel insects and lavender attracts butterflies...marigolds are great to repel rabbits, chipmunks, gophers... but they don't repel insects.

Try planting marigolds. they are pretty and repel insects...

Be careful what you plant around them as they will absorb some flavor from nearby plants. If they get squash bugs, one of my gardening friends recommends radishes to repel squash bugs. Other insects can be repelled by organic insecticidal soap which won't hurt the veggies quality.
