To a minor degree, yes, this does seem to have some effectiveness, but nothing will completely repel spiders. Cedar and lemon scented furniture polish works a bit too.

What's the chances of a spider being in your bedroom? 1 in a million? Lets face it I could count on one hand the amount of times that's happened to me, in fact in one digit.

If it works, great! If it doesn't, how cool is that to have a crazy Granny.

I visit lots of properties and loads of people do this. Something to do with a toxin it gives off to the spider.

It never worked for me...just gave the cat something extra to play with.

If she's happy to think so, good for her. Actually there is some evidence that the smell of chestnut deters spiders but I'm not convinced that a conker would be effective. We've been trying a spray that is alleged to contain both chestnut and clover scent and is supposed to do the trick when sprayed around openings like doors and windows. I don't know whether it's that or is just a coincidence but we have had noticeably fewer spiders since using it. Doesn't smell bad, either.

She's crazy. misguided might be a better word. She's always going to get spiders. Makes sure there are no windows being left open at night, they are attracted by the warmth and moisture. Put any you catch a long way from the house, or they'll be back.
