Trying to catch Hemileuca eglanterina

H. eglanterinaHere I am preparing to try to catch the day-flying sheep moth: Hemileuca eglanterina. Not easy. At this bluff overlooking Hot Creek (below Mammoth Lakes, CA) the moth was coming at us from all directions - and fast! It was fruitless to run after them due to their high speed. All we could do was stand in one place and wait for them to come at us, hopefully within swinging distance. My colleague and I managed to bag about 50 of the moths in a three-hour period and must have missed three times that amount - and had a lot of fun doing it. August 2, 2000.
