Wet spot

'The Wet Spot'. A favorite watering hole for butterflies. I found this spot in the San Bernardino Mountains at about 5,000 feet elevation. Many butterflies gather here on hot summer mornings to sip moisture and minerals from the mud. While they are 'puddling' they are relatively easy to catch. I have captured 5 to 8 butterflies at a time by placing my net over the top of a group of them. I always look for spots like this. The key is to find a year-round water seepage or small creek that is crossing a dirt road so as to create a permanent mud puddle. Wet spot locations that get hot sunlight for most of the day are best.
