photo of cage

This is a smaller cage, about 20" high, also made from screen kits purchased at the hardware store. I designed this mainly to be used as an enclosure for Papilios to oviposit on a potted food plant, but it serves multiple purposes: as a rearing cage for caterpillars and as an emerging cage for pupae. I used dacron chiffon instead of window screen for the top and sides, making this cage virtually parasite-proof. The front panels and door are fitted with thin Plexiglass for better viewing and photography. The bottom is made from expanded PVC sheet, which is waterproof. The PVC material was purchased from a signmaker shop but it can also be found at plastics supply companies. This time I constructed a top panel and a bottom panel above and below the main door. This provides structural strength, but more importantly the top panel will make it less likely for live butterflies to escape when I open the door (since they tend to fly upwards).
