Position hindwings

Spreading Butterflies: Step 7. Position the hindwings. Move the hindwings up higher. I usually alternate between the right and left sides when moving the wings up so as to equalize the muscle tension on the butterfly body. Note that I have placed an extra pin near the leading edge of the right forewing in this picture. This is to hold the wing more securely once it is in the desired position. I try to avoid at all costs actually putting this pin through the wing of the butterfly, but I have had to do just that on occasion with old specimens that did not relax completely. In these cases, after de-pinning I will patch the holes with a very small drop of black acrylic paint applied on the underside of the wing.
