larva and pupae photo

November 3rd. Here is a close-up of Great Purple Hairstreak larva and pupae positioning themselves under a piece of black paper nakpin that was placed in the bottom of the rearing cage. These are about 15mm in length. The larva on the upper left is 'assuming the position' before pupating. This period lasts about 4 days. The pink pupa on the lower right has just formed and is still soft. The pupa on the upper right is the normal brown 'coffee bean' color after drying. Note the discarded larval skins still attached to the pupae.
