Baird's Swallowtail Rearing Project - Handpairing for the second generation
(Papilio machaon bairdii)

photo of pinned butterfliesI left my pupae cage outside in the hot summer weather. The pupae began eclosing about 3 weeks later; rather quickly due to the high ambient temps. Here I am handpairing a male and female from the first batch. Swallowtails do not readily pair by themselves in captivity so handpairing is advised. In order for this to work the male should be at least three days old and the female should be as fresh as possible. Once they connect you can let go of them after about 30 seconds and place them in a cage. In this session they remained paired for about an hour. About 4 days later the gravid female oviposited in my dacron flight cage. The pupae from this batch will overwinter until next June.
