Rearing Papilio rutulus
Here's a good day's catch. I have captured live female butterflies to bring home and see if they will oviposit in captivity. I carefully remove the captured butterfly from the net and place them with wings folded in glassine envelopes with air holes, being extra careful not to pinch them or break their legs. Then I put the enevelopes in a non-airtight plastic container and place the container in a cooler for the trip home. The holes in the envelopes are important because the live butterflies can suffocate if the enevelope is too tight. Keeping them cool in transit on a hot day is also important so that they don't get heatstroke or expend too much energy struggling and trying to escape.
