Rearing Papilio rutulus
3rd instar, silk pads

Living in tree tops has its risks. This photo reveals the method the rutulus larvae use to stay on the host plant without falling off. They always make a silk pad as a home base. Then they venture out from there to feed until it's time to move to their base to another leaf. This is just the ticket to hang on for dear life when the high winds come.
