cage

This is a crude but effective flight cage for breeding certain butterflies. I made the window screen panels from screen kits purchased at the hardware store. I used sheet metal screws to assemble the panels and added a hinged door and plywood floor. Cost of materials: about $40.00. The size is 4 feet high x 2 feet x 2 feet. Not all butterflies will breed in such a small space but I have been successful with both Monarch and Dogface butterflies, which will readily breed and lay eggs in this cage. The cage is not parasite proof, however. So, in my next design I will use parasite-proof 'dacron chiffon' sleeve material instead of window screen and a PVC sheet on the bottom instead of plywood (which eventually rots from the watering runoff).
