Baird's Swallowtail Rearing Project - Pupae in cage
(Papilio machaon bairdii)

photo of pinned butterfliesI carefully pinned the bairdii pupae up in a cage lined with thick styrofoam. I used thick sheets so that I could push the pins in deeply, so as to avoid any protrusions that could possibly damage the wings of the emerging butterflies. I make sure that the front of the pupae face towards the foam so that the butterflies will have something tactile to grab on to when they first emerge. Some caterpillars pupated in paper bags so I simply cut the paper around them and pinned the pieces up at the proper angle. It is always best to leave the silk bridal intact on the substrate with swallowtail pupae, so that they can be pinned up in their natural, upright hanging position.
